Description
College students were the majority of people recruited to serve as Freedom Summer volunteers. But COFO also reached out to college professors nationwide for support. The intellectual community was asked to help combat racial discrimination by serving as observers/analysts for the initiative itself, leading seminars during the training sessions in Ohio, and by helping to organize the Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party (an alternative to the all-White Democratic delegation that was devised by COFO). The leadership sent this letter to urge professors and college faculty to lend their mental prowess to the fight for freedom.
