This site is dedicated to telling the stories of the courageous people who took part in 1964's Mississippi Freedom Project, also known as Freedom Summer. COFO (Council of Federated Organizations) developed a vision for repairing Mississippi’s marred racial relations and Freedom Summer was proposed as the means to change the South's hostile reality. This project called for college students from across the nation, especially Southern African American students (although the volunteers were mostly Northern, White students), to organize Mississippi’s African American communities, register voters, operate Freedom Schools and establish community centers. The immense bravery and sacrifice of Freedom Summer's leaders, volunteers, and participants will be forever memorialized here.
